As I made mention of in the last post, I have officially quit my job at MOAB bikes in order to embark on a cross-country bicycle expedition along the Adventure Cycling Association's TransAmerica route. I've given myself about 2.5 months to complete the journey of roughly 4,600 miles which, after some research, seems to be about the average amount of time it takes other people. That equates to about 75 miles per day or so. These are pre-ride predictions, so we'll see how it actually pans out...
I'm starting a little north of the actual route in Seattle and then finishing a little north of the end in D.C. I most definitely have built in some time to spend in various places along the way including:
I know people in each of these places and many of them I haven't seen in a long time. If there are other places along the way that I absolutely can't miss, please let me know in the comments and I'll try to make it there! Or if you find yourself along the way, I'd be great to see a familiar face out on the road!
This trip has been an evolving idea in the back of my mind for at least a couple years. A long time ago, when I was working at Allanti with AdamD, a guy named RJ (yes, the same RJ that wound up at MOAB for a bit) hired on and he had done the much the same trip but in the other direction. Hearing him talk about his trip and his experiences, I got the itch to do it too. At that time though, I was still in high school and had no real chunks of free-time for the foreseeable future as I was headed to college soon and would wind up being busy with all number of other things each and every summer.
- Portland
- Bend
- Missoula
- Yellow Stone
- Steamboat Spring
- Denver
- St. Louis
- Louisville
- Boone
- And D.C.

To touch on a different but still related subject, I am concurrently applying to Miami Ad School's art direction program, and if I get in, I would enroll in the fall. October to be exact... so doing this trip now made a lot of sense. I knew life would continue to get in the way of this bike adventure idea if I didn't do anything about it soon, so after getting a more solid plan for the summer, I gave Mark my month-and-a-half notice. To be completely honest, this was a really hard choice to make because the summer time at MOAB is by far the busiest part of the year, and I was leaving just as things were picking up.
Note: if you shop at MOAB (and you should), please understand that they will bend over backwards for you. It just may take some time, especially during the summer months.
Another contributing factor of the timing of my tour is my cousin's wedding in September near Boone, NC. I still haven't decided if I'll be able to finish my trip and then go, or just be arriving in Boone when the wedding happens... TBD!
I'll certainly keep you posted about the result of the MAS application. And like I said before, let me know if there are things you think I can't miss along the way!
